SARS 2 supposedly is a once in a life time global pandemic, but ~SARS 1 was 20 years ago. Who says in 20 years that another one can't pop up? More than likely election, anti-vaxxer, covid deniers aka Republicans might, but who cares what they say or think. Those who cannot learn to discern bad information submit to darwinism. Like in all areas you ignore the dumb and look for the optimal.
I think its worth buying masks for the next pandemic. I'm not sure buying them today is a good idea, but within the next 10 years I'd say it wouldn't be a bad idea. If another respiratory based global pandemic happens, you can bust out the masks and not be caught off guard like the billions of people around the world were where masks were supply constrained. You needed to make masks from cloth and receive guidance from a medical agency not to hoard masks or buy any (because doctors need them more than you) for that matter. Next time, it could be a crime to buy masks given resource constraints. You can whine all you want, but doctors are far more important than you during a medical emergency. Like in any war, whoever can fight or mitigate is more valuable than those who cannot do anything.
In the next 10 yrs, I'd say buy some p100 masks and refills then put them into a box near your first aid kit. You'd be remiss to not have learned from this pandemic that most people are average and the average is below standards. There's no reason to be average when it comes to prevention.
The pandemic also showed the effectiveness of having food stock. You did not have to spend as much as others on the food you stocked up on while all the averages had to spend more money out of pocket.
I still will wear a mask in a large venue like an airport because I don't care what other people smell like and I don't want them cooties. Look at the flu. Mask wearing did that. Insane.
Don't be the average.
