It's a serious performance beast vs my old Intel 10th Gen Dell laptop and a 2018 Xeon Server which are both bigger than this Framework laptop. Geez man, woooooo, it run laps around these things. 3m compiling a Rust Project that took 20m+ on the 2018 Xeon Server. Almost 10x improvement right there.
I didn't even buy it for performance either. It was the cheapest spec and very low TDP like near Apple M1 TDP. I bought it to replace my Xeon server because it's about time to replace it. I wanted to buy another server from part like this one and using Intel, but Intel's product lineup is weird AF nowadays. I couldn't even choose what I wanted even though my north star was low TDP. The Xeon Server has 60w TDP, but I wanted something more towards Apple M1 TDP (9w) since there shouldn't be much if any fan noise while idle. The server always made a lot of noise and it would get louder when building rust applications. This thing produces what; 15-30w TDP. Much better than the server. I shouldn't be surprised it is faster than the server, but by almost 10 TIMES?
Look, there are no good low spec server hardware. I was thinking to buy a mini-atx or custom chassis and hope the fans wouldn't need too much power. I gave up and decided I wanted something thin that could be repairable and I remember Framework laptops. Again, I wanted to buy Intel, but their TDPs ehhhh. I looked at AMDs and figured how bad could 15-30w range be. I chose the lowest spec since this is just using a console screen no KDE, Gnome GUI or anything. Framework laptops are open, so you can buy your own parts. I of course bought a Samsung PRO SSD from elsewhere everything else I bought from Framework. I almost ordered the "wrong" drive when I first chose it though. I thought since it was an 13in laptop that I would need the mini NVME drive. Ha. I went beast mode with this one 2TB 7400 MB/s read 🔖 7000 MB/s write ✍️.
I think it is insane that I just cloned the disk from the server to the laptop and because Linux/Fedora it just WORKS. If it were Windows, ugh. It would suck installing the OS, programs, copying things, etc. I'm pleasantly happy with this Framework laptop.
Now I need to get rid of this Server and Dell Laptop.
