Sigh. Like SOPA and all the other overbroad bills before it that caused internet companies to protest with blackouts. This entire bill to not just counter social communications software, but a whole lot more.
Article, Vice: https://www.vice.com/en/article/4a3ddb/restrict-act-insanely-broad-ban-tiktok-vpns
“The RESTRICT Act could lead to apps and other ICT services with connections to certain foreign countries being banned in the United States. Any bill that would allow the US government to ban an online service that facilitates Americans' speech raises serious First Amendment concerns,”
Doesn't Tencent own quite a portion of Epic Games? Should we also ban Epic Games' Fortnite too because Epic Games could be forced to hand over data to the Chinese Government via Tencent? How about Riot Games, which Tencent fully owns? Tencent's been bankrolling American entertainment companies and they should suffer while having no direct impact on the American populace?
I like how they use Huawei, Tiktok and Kaspersky, the foreign tech BOOGEYMEN to justify the bill.
Might be better to pass a law that restricts data storage of American activities to be stored in American data centers if they are so concerned about foreign competitors. Yes, America copy China and Russia if you are so concerned about data privacy. It wouldn't be the first time.
P.S. I was going to look at a video from "The Breaking Points", but realized immediately it is garbage. Soon as one of them mentioned "there's no mention of TikTok in the bill" they gave it away that they are looking for outrage porn and I closed that video. There's just no serving you if people are going to use this situation to misinform you about how law making works. Yes guys, there will never be a mention of "TIKTOK" in a bill ever.
